Clinton, Miss. – At the Clinton School District bus barn, 73 buses are ready to roll on the first day of school. But before that can happen, the district still needs 2 full time drivers and about 6 substitute drivers. Transportation Director Terry Harris says it’s a problem he sees just about every year. “They have to have a good driving record. No criminal history. Good moral character. Someone who likes students.” You also need a commercial drivers license and be able to pass a drug test. It can sometimes be hard to find people who want the work, “You’re free in the daytime and that kind of messes up people’s schedules. It’s not convenient for people who work or have full time jobs. That’s one of the reasons.”
Leaders at others schools agree with Harris. The Vicksburg-Warren School District needs one more full time driver but say they are still looking for a number of substitutes. In the Hinds County School District, they have a full staff of 88 full time drivers but are always looking for subs.
Jackson Public Schools need to fill 15 bus driver positions. A spokesperson for JPS says, “Additionally, we feel confident in filling the remaining vacancies as we continue to process new hire applications for review and approval by the Board of Trustees.” The Pearl School District has one full-time bus driver position and 2 afternoon-only positions.
Harris says to make sure drivers do the best job possible, he asks students to follow a few rules, “Be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus arrives. While they’re waiting on the bus not be playing around. And when the bus arrives be standing in a straight line and wait for the bus driver to signal them to get on the bus.”
