A group of protestors interrupted state budget hearings holding a banner with the names of 16 inmates who recently died while in custody at prisons throughout Mississippi.

In recent weeks, individuals began protesting the Mississippi Department of Corrections over what appeared to be an unusually high number of deaths over the course of one month.

For the first time in public, MDOC Commissioner Pelecia Hall commented. She said natural causes are the reasons for most of the inmate deaths. She says with an aging inmate population, many need specialty care.
