Thirteenth inmate dies while in MDOC’s custody

Another inmate has died this month while in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Correction.

The latest death brings the total to thirteen during the month of August. Seventy-five year old Tony Springer was pronounced dead at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula.

He was serving six years for unlawful touch of a child. He was an inmate at the South Mississippi Correctional Facility in Leakesville.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.

Governor Phil Bryant says he’s in touch with the Department of Corrections and says they are working with other agencies to investigate each death but he does not feel there’s anything unusual going on.
