HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – On Saturday, December 26, 2015, the University of Southern Mississippi will be competing in the 2015 Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl.

However, that day means something different for one Southern Mississippi football player.

That USM player helped save a 4-year-old girl trapped in a submerged car.

Chasity White and her daughter Helena  while driving on December 26, 2014, when the car went off the road into a body of water.

Southern Miss Junior Linebacker Evan Osborne and a friend stopped to help after failed attempts to remove Helena from the submerged car.

Osborne ran into the waste high freezing water to help lift the car.

Helena was later removed and Osborne left the scene as paramedics arrived.

For days, no one knew the names of Osborne and his friend but he was later identified.

Osborne says, “God had us there that day for that reason and I am just glad we could help get her out.  We did what anyone should do.”

Osborne recently received the 2015 Ray Guy Special Teams MVP award.

The USM Golden Eagles will play the Washington Huskies on Saturday, December 26, 2015, at 1:20 p.m. on ESPN.
