HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT)- Local blood provider Vitalant has partnered with food delivery service provider Waitr for a blood drive down in the Pine belt.

The blood drive will go on from October 19th thru November 2nd to combat the blood donation shortage that has occurred since the covid-19 outbreak. Administrators at Vitalant say 400 blood drives across the country have been cancelled due to the coronavirus.

On a daily basis Vitalant says 250 units of blood donations is what they need to meet the needs of hospital patients. Administrators stress it is still safe to give blood during the pandemic and giving blood is more important now than ever.

“So what where doing is were testing all of our blood donors for Covid-19 antibodies, what where looking for is more convalescent plasma donors. That’s people who have recovered from Covid-19 and we get their plasma donation and it goes to help other people who are fighting Covid-19 in the hospital. It gives them some more antibodies and it helps them fight off the virus.” -Katie Nielsen Donor Recruitment Supervisor

Supporters of the blood drive will receive a Waitr logo’d face mask for continued effort to fight off the spread of Coronavirus and a free delivery coupon code.
