Volunteers collect signatures for petition to make Gluckstadt its own city

MADISON, COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — Residents in Madison County are looking to incorporate Gluckstadt as its own city.

Volunteers are holding a petition signing at some of the polls.

The petition must be signed by two- thirds of qualified voters in the area. Mayor-Select Walter Morrison said the area has grown over the years and it feels like the perfect time to try and make Gluckstadt its own city.

We’re told this isn’t the first time the community has tried to incorporate Gluckstadt. The most recent attempt was back in 2008.

Volunteer Kerry Minninger said the city was growing too fast during that time and they couldn’t get all the signatures they needed.

“We were doing really well,” he said. “Gluckstadt was growing so fast that we weren’t able to keep up with signatures. We’d go through an area to get signatures and before we could get through that area more people moved in so we’d have to start over. So at that time we kind of stopped, took a step back and kind regrouped and came up with a different plan.”

Once the petition has two-thirds of the signatures needed, it will be filled with the Madison County Chancery Court. A judge will then decide if the community will move forward as an incorporated city.

Volunteers will be out until 7 p.m., collecting signatures.
