West Jones, Taylorsville victorious, Magee falls on first day of state baseball

PEARL — The high school baseball state championships got underway at Trustmark Park Monday, and there are three teams in the WJTV coverage area our sports department will be tracking.

First up – Taylorsville. The Tartars got things rolling with a 8-1 win over Calhoun City in game one of the 2A championship series. Walker Gable was dominant on the mound – going the distance and only giving up one run. Game two is Friday at 1 pm.

Magee had its hands full with North Pontotoc, losing 12-2 in 6 innings. The Trojans will try to bounce back in game two, Thursday at 4 pm.

West Jones took game one of the 5A championship in convincing fashion over Lafayette, 10-1. Cole Tolbert went 4-4 at the plate for the Mustangs.
