Fitzgerald breaks Tebow’s SEC rushing record

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald broke the SEC career record for rushing yards by a quarterback in MSU’s 23-9 win over Auburn.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 (1-2 SEC) and Joe Moorhead’s first SEC win as the Bulldogs head coach is against a Top 10 team.

This win saw the return of Mississippi State’s powerful ground game, one that is led by their senior quarterback.

The team said afterwards that the rushing record set by Fitzgerald is something in which they all take pride.

“I do see that as a team accomplishment because I’ve been blocking for Nick Fitzgerald since 2015,” said senior offensive lineman Deion Calhoun. “wW all part of that accomplishment. I’m happy for him to be the leading rusher in the SEC.”

Fitzgerald said he owes much of his success to his team.

“I’s an achievement to me but it’s a huge compliment to them. It’s a huge compliment to how hard they play for me and how well they do, specifically my five up front, blocking and opening up holes for us,” Fitzgerald said. “Overall it’s an amazing feeling to know you left your mark on the best conference in college football.”
