FLORENCE, Miss. (WJTV) – The McLaurin Tigers are off to their best start to a season since 2012.

Not only is this 4-1 start their best in 6 years, it quadrupled their win total from the past two seasons combined.

So based on their record this season, a turnaround is evident within the program.

However, head coach Sid Wheatley said his team’s growth really stuck out last week in a win at Enterprise. The Tigers trailed late but came back to win 19-16.

“I’m not sure we would have been to that point last year,” Wheatley said. “But the confidence now is at an all-time high and they feel really good about things and the way the program is going.”

That confidence is not only evident, but the players say it’s satisfying to know they have a good chacne to win every week.

“It’s like every Friday when them lights click on, my heart get to beating,” junior wide receiver and defensive back Marquez Wells said. “I look at my team. I’m like, dang, I’m really glad I’m in this position right now with these boys.”

Junior defensive back Kenny Bacon also credits coach Wheatley for helping energize this team.

“Every Friday, our coach, he gives us a pretty confident speech that we can go out there and give us the mindset that we going to win,” Bacon said.
