JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Millsaps women’s basketball team still has one game left on the regular season schedule, but they’ve already clinched the SAA regular season championship.
The Lady Majors clinched the title Sunday with a 20-point win over Rhodes. That 20-point win gave them 20 on the season, and the victory highlighted hte team’s impressive turnaround.
Last season, the Majors won just eight games.
They say a mission trip in August to Costa Rica helped bring them together.
“We did about 20 hours of community service in these communities,” third-year head coach Justin LeBlanc said. “I think that was a huge thing for us coming together as a team, kinda getting our players to think outside themselves.”
They have had to think outside of themselves based on the way playing time has changed. Some seniors were relegated to coming off the bench and were replaced by underclassmen.
However, senior guard Braxton Thomas said that trip helped change the mindset of the players on the team.
“We went there, we saw people who were less fortunate than us and didn’t really realize their condition was, in our eyes, a bad condition,” said Thomas. “So we decided to be more thankful for what we have.”
Millsaps finishes the regular season Saturday at Birmingham Southern. The Majors will host the conference tournament beginning next Friday.
