WJTV – A report by ‘The Athletic’ detailed the recruitment by Southern Miss of a football player who was accused of rape.

The report says Charles West signed with the school in January. A school spokersperson told WJTV Thursday night that West “signed a grant in aid, but after discovery by athletic staff members, he was declined admission”.

Back in 2015, West was accused of rape on two different occassions. He would later have his charges downgraded to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He took a plea deal and is on probation.

‘The Athletic’ says the charges were not included on his admissions applicaton nor did head coach Jay Hopson notify the school of West’s past.

This report comes a day after Hopson was told former Baylor head coach Art Briles could no longer be considered a candidate for opening the team has for offensive coordinator.
