RIDGELAND, Miss. (WJTV) – The Ridgeland High football team enters the new season trying to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
The player the Titans have leading the offense is sophomore quarterback Zy McDonald. However, it’s not like McDonald doesn’t have any experience.
Instead, last year as a freshman, he played in all 11 of Ridgeland’s games, throwing 22 touchdowns to 7 interceptions.
Despite his QB’s youth, third-year head coach Ryan Earnest says McDonald is a smart player.
“he’s a kid that’s very mature for his age. he’s a football junkie, loves the game, loves the film aspect of it, loves the practice aspect, loves everything about the game of football,” Earnest said. “There’s really not too much you can throw at him that he can’t handle.”
McDonald says he didn’t expect to be playing varsity last year.
“I was really just going in there trying to be a 9th grader and play on a 9th grade football team and then work my way up,” McDonald said. “I’m very comfortable because it’s still football no matter what.”
Ridgeland opens the regular season next Friday against Velma Jackson.
