Southern Miss in search of top five spot in C-USA Standings

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – The Southern Miss men’s basketball team hosts UTSA and UTEP this week.

If the Golden Eagles win out, they will clinch a spot in the top group of Conference USA’s new scheduling format.

At the end of this weekend, the 14 schools in the league will be broken up, based on standings, into three groups.

The groups will have teams 1-5, 6-10 and 11-14.

The teams will then play within their groups the rest of the regular season. They are also guaranteed seeding in the C-USA tournament based on their group.

Right now, Southern Miss is fifth.

“I think the games, as each one comes up, can mean more and more and more and become more important,” said head coach Doc Sadler. “So that’s what you hope for.”

Teams also hope to be playing their best basketball late in the season, and that’s exactly what the Golden Eagles are doing. They enter Thursday’s game against UTSA on a four-game win streak.

“You gotta prepare for each team the same way,” said redshirt guard Kevin Holland. “UTSA’s at the top, UTEP’s toward the bottom, but you gotta prepare to beat them at our home court.”
