SWAC Media Day: JSU Emphasizing Leadership in 2018

BIRMINGHAM, Al. (WJTV) - Jackson State says it worked on something this offseason that has been missing in the last two years under Tony Hughes.

However, the team did show improvement at the end of last season.

The Tigers won three of their last four games, and the team says they hope the momentum they built will carry into the fall. However, the team says in order to do that, they will need better leadership from its players.

"This summer I challenged our leadership committee that they were going to have to lead the team," said head coach Tony Hughes. "They were going to have to be the ones to set us in motion."

Jackson State lost 16 seniors from last year's roster. With a younger, more inexperienced team in 2018, Hughes says he's relying heavily on his upperclassmen.

"We've been trying to nurture a lot of the younger guys to make sure that they are on the same page with us," senior linebacker Eric Bowie said.

"We take it amongst ourselves as seniors and guys that have that kind of character to lead to make sure that the freshman that come in, the younger guys, that we mold them," said senior wide receiver Romello Shumake.

Hughes says based on the leadership he's seen throughout the summer, his team should improve.

"Our leadership has been tremendous, our kids have led, they've worked, they've set the tone," Hughes said. "So, that has to carry over for us going forward."
