YAZOO CITY, Miss. (WJTV) – One of the best basketball coaches in state history is Archie Carlyle. Tuesday night, Yazoo City, which is one of his former schools, found a way to honor the legend.

The high school held a ceremony to dedicate the gymnasium in his honor.

Carlyle caoches the boys team at Yazoo City to a state title in 1996 and the girls team to a title in 2009.

With some of his former players behind him, his son and current boys head coach and athletic director, Anthony, presented him a plaque to remember the night.

However, his father said seeing his name on the floor for the first time was pretty special.

“Oh, I was weak,” he said. “I was just glad to see Carlyle on that floor. Wasn’t expecting it, and I wasn’t doing anything for it. They hit me with it and told me about all the accomplishments. It’s a great honor. It’s probably one of the biggest things that happened to me.”

Carlyle is also a member of the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame.
